But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then David's men adjured him, “You shall no more go out with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”

And David sent forth the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, “I myself will also go out with you.”

But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”

They came upon me in the day of my calamity; but the Lord was my stay.

Yea, thou art my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness.

Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name.

Nevertheless for David's sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem;

There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

who givest victory to kings, who rescuest David thy servant.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Let me go and slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Jews who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?”

He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
