So David and his men went on the road, while Shime-i went along on the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him and flung dust.

When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shime-i, the son of Gera; and as he came he cursed continually.

Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.”

Behold our shield, O God; look upon the face of thine anointed!

“You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people.

The breath of our nostrils, the Lord's anointed, was taken in their pits, he of whom we said, “Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.”

He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed.”

But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless?”
