So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,

Then the king arose, and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate”; and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.

And they said to him, “If you will be kind to this people and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.”

The murderer rises in the dark, that he may kill the poor and needy; and in the night he is as a thief.

When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand about you from morning till evening?”

when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God and his decisions.”

And they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves.

For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong; they are robbed of sleep unless they have made some one stumble.

In his place shall arise a contemptible person to whom royal majesty has not been given; he shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death;

“If any case arises requiring decision between one kind of homicide and another, one kind of legal right and another, or one kind of assault and another, any case within your towns which is too difficult for you, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the Lord your God will choose,

And Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there; and behold, the next of kin, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here”; and he turned aside and sat down.
