The people of Israel tried to become right with God by obeying the law, but that didn’t work.

What should we say then? The people of Israel didn’t receive what they wanted so badly. Those Israelites who were chosen did receive it, but the rest of the people were made stubborn.

So no one can obey the law well enough to be considered right with God. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

As for being strict about the law, I’m a Pharisee. As for zeal, I opposed and attacked the church. As far as keeping the law is concerned, I kept it perfectly.

So is the law opposed to God’s promises? Certainly not! If a law had been given that could give life, then people could become right with God by obeying that law.

So who can brag? Nobody! Is that because of the law that they can’t obey? No, they can’t brag because of the law that requires faith.

And in Isaiah, God says boldly, “I was found by those who weren’t trying to find me. I made myself known to those who weren’t asking for me.”
