What should we say then? That the law is sinful? Not at all! But I wouldn’t have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law says, “Do not covet.” If the law hadn’t said that, I wouldn’t have known that wanting what belongs to other people was “coveting,” and that it was wrong.

So no one can obey the law well enough to be considered right with God. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

because the law brings God’s anger. But where there is no law, the law can’t be broken.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

There’s a commandment that says, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” That one command sums up all the others, including “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not commit murder,” “Do not steal,” and, “Don’t want what belongs to others.”

But once I did know about coveting, sin took that opportunity to make me want all kinds of things that belonged to other people! A person can’t sin by breaking a law if that law doesn’t exist.

Don’t desire to commit sexual sins like people who don’t know God.

But some people might be thinking about this in a human way and ask, “Doesn’t the fact that we’re wrong prove more clearly that God is right? So how is it fair for God to punish us?”

So put to death anything that comes from your wrong desires: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

There shouldn’t be even a hint of any sexual sin among you, or of anything impure or greedy, because those are not the kinds of things that God’s holy people should do.

Did what is good cause me to die? Not at all! But sin had to be recognized for what it was. So it used what was good to bring about my death. Because of the commandment, sin became totally sinful.

Sin took advantage of the opportunity that the commandment provided, and it tricked me. It used the commandment to put me to death.

The power of sin used to control us. The law told us we couldn’t do certain things, but that only made us want to do them more. So our lives produced only death.

What should we say then? Should we keep on sinning because we’re not ruled by the law but by God’s grace? Not at all!

What should we say that Abraham, the father of our people, discovered about being right with God?

I wasn’t greedy for anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be careful not to get greedy, because life isn’t about how much a person has.”

But I tell you that anyone who looks with lust at a woman has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

He will come and kill them and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “We hope this never happens!”

When the law was introduced, sin got worse, because now people were doing things that they knew were wrong. But when sin got worse, God poured out an even greater abundance of grace.

The law didn’t make anything perfect, but a better hope has now been given to us, and it brings us near to God.
