Did he become right with God because of something he did? If so, he could brag about that (though he couldn’t brag to God).

It is written, “The one who boasts should boast about what the Lord has done.”

If I have to brag, let me brag about the things that show how weak I am.

I want to belong to him, and I want to be right with God based not on my obedience to the law but on my faith in Christ.

It’s not based on anything you’ve done. No one can brag about earning it.

But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised could be given through faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe.

I’m not bragging about preaching the good news. I have to preach the good news—woe to me if I don’t!

That way no one can brag to God about who or what they are.

We’re not trying to recommend ourselves to you again, but we are giving you a chance to be proud of us. That way you can answer those who judge people by external appearances, rather than by what’s in their hearts.

Thanks to Christ Jesus, I can take pride in the work I’ve done for God.

And I’m going to keep on doing what I’ve been doing, in order to discredit the people who think they should be considered equal with us.
