So who can brag? Nobody! Is that because of the law that they can’t obey? No, they can’t brag because of the law that requires faith.

You brag about the law, but when you break it, you rob God of his honor!

Did he become right with God because of something he did? If so, he could brag about that (though he couldn’t brag to God).

But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised could be given through faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe.

Suppose you call yourself a Jew. You trust in the law and you brag about God.

Here’s the law that I find to be at work in me. When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

But even though we’re used to following the law, we still know that no one can be made right with God that way. Instead, a person needs to believe in Jesus Christ. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus to be made right with God. We’re not trying to do that by obeying the law, because no one can be made right with God by obeying the law.

Who thinks you’re different from anyone else? What do you have that wasn’t given to you? And if it was given to you, why do you brag as though it came from you?

And if they are chosen by grace, then it’s not based on anything they’ve done. If it were, then grace wouldn’t be grace anymore.

Moses writes about how the law could help a person do what God requires: “The person who does these things will live by them.”

Why not? Because they tried to do it themselves, instead of relying on faith in God. They tripped over the stone that causes people to trip and fall.

But even before her twins were born, before they’d done anything good or bad, Rebekah was told, “The older son will serve the younger one.” This shows that God’s purpose was based firmly on his own choice, not on anything the children did.

The law of the Spirit who gives life through Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Thanks be to God, who saves me through Jesus Christ our Lord. So in my mind, I’m a slave to God’s law. But if I follow my sinful desires, then I’m a slave to the law of sin.

But I recognize that there’s another law at work inside of me. It’s fighting the law of my mind and making me a prisoner to the law of sin that’s at work within me.

We know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are governed by the law. Its purpose is to silence every excuse and hold the whole world accountable to God.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever who does not obey the Son will not see life, because God’s anger remains on them.

Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but anyone who doesn’t believe will be condemned.

God did all this to prove that he does what is right and that he makes those who believe in Jesus right with himself.

The people of Israel tried to become right with God by obeying the law, but that didn’t work.
