Hearing the law doesn’t make a person right with God. Obeying the law does.

Dear children, don’t let anyone lead you astray. The person who does what is right is holy, just as Christ is holy.

Being circumcised is valuable if you obey the law. But if you break the law, it’s just as if you weren’t circumcised.

But even though we’re used to following the law, we still know that no one can be made right with God that way. Instead, a person needs to believe in Jesus Christ. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus to be made right with God. We’re not trying to do that by obeying the law, because no one can be made right with God by obeying the law.

You know that God always does what is right, so you also know that everyone who does what is right is God’s child.

Moses writes about how the law could help a person do what God requires: “The person who does these things will live by them.”

He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and do what it says.”

There’s only one God. He’ll make those who are circumcised right with himself by faith, and he’ll make those who aren’t circumcised right with himself by that same faith.

Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin. Moses’ law cannot make you right in God’s eyes.

“I tell you, the tax collector went home accepted by God, but the Pharisee didn’t. All those who lift themselves up will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

Some of you are trying to be made right with God by obeying the law. As a result, you’ve been separated from Christ and you’ve fallen away from God’s grace.

Everyone has sinned, and no one measures up to God’s glory,

So no one can obey the law well enough to be considered right with God. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

Now that you know these things, you’ll be blessed if you do them.

I don’t feel I have done anything wrong, but that doesn’t mean I’m not guilty. It’s the Lord who judges me.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is to take care of widows and orphans who are in trouble and not let the world contaminate you.
