But when the Son of Man came, he did eat and drink the way most people do, and you said, ‘He’s always eating and drinking too much. He’s a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ’ But wisdom is proved right by its own actions.”

“But the tax collector stood off by himself and wouldn’t even look up to heaven. He struck his chest in remorse and prayed, ‘God, have mercy on me. I’m a sinner.’

Because the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus,

If they still refuse to listen, then tell it to the community of believers. And if they refuse to listen even to the community, then treat them the way you would treat an unbeliever or a traitor.

“Be careful not to do good deeds in front of other people so that they’ll see you. If you do that, you won’t get any reward from your Father in heaven.

When all the people saw this, they began to whisper among themselves, “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

A man named Zacchaeus lived there. He was a chief tax collector and he was very rich.

If you say hello only to your friends, what more are you doing than others? Even people who don’t believe in God do that.

Later Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, and many tax collectors and sinners came to eat with him and his disciples. They were part of the large crowd that was following Jesus.

Some teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors, and they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

Levi gave a huge banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors and others came and ate with them.

But the Pharisees and their teachers of the law complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

When all the people, including the tax collectors, heard Jesus’ words, they agreed that God’s way was right, because they’d all been baptized by John.

But when the Son of Man came, he did eat and drink, but you said, ‘He always eats and drinks way too much, and he has tax collectors and sinners for friends.’
