“The prophets of long ago were treated in the same way. So when these things happen to you, be glad and jump for joy. You will receive many blessings in heaven.
Without faith it’s impossible to please God, because those who come to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who try hard to find him.
But even if my life is going to be poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I’ll be glad and joyful with all of you.
Our troubles are small and they last only for a short time, but they’re earning a glory for us that will last forever. That glory outweighs all our troubles.
“When you go without eating, don’t look all sad like the hypocrites. They make strange faces so that people will notice that they’re fasting. Truly I tell you, that’s all the reward they’ll get.
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then you will have a great reward. You will be children of the Most High God, who is kind to people who do wrong and are ungrateful.
“Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I’ve wanted to gather your people together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me.
You suffered along with people in prison, and when your property was taken from you, you accepted that with joy, because you knew that God had given you better and more lasting things.
