Though he had grown up in Nazareth, he went to live in the city of Capernaum. That was by the lake, in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali.

Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. A royal official was there whose son was sick in bed at Capernaum.

They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath day came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

And what about you, Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to the heavens? No! You’ll go down to the place of the dead. If the miracles that I did in you had been done in Sodom, it would still be here today.

He said this while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

and the crowd realized that Jesus and his disciples weren’t there. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.

There they got into a boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. By then it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.

After that, Jesus went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. They all stayed there for a few days.

Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum. There the people who collected the temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”

Jesus responded, “You’ll certainly apply this saying to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself!’ And by that you’ll mean, ‘We want you to do here in your hometown the things we’ve heard you did in Capernaum.’ ”

In that way, the words of the prophet Isaiah came true. He had said,

“Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Galilee, where Gentiles live! Land along the Mediterranean Sea! Territory east of the Jordan River!

So Jesus got into a boat, crossed over the lake again, and came to his own town.

Some time later, Jesus went back into Capernaum. When the people learned that he’d come home,

And what about you, Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to the heavens? No! You will go down to the place of the dead.
