he saved us, not because of any good things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us by washing away our sins so that we were born again.

We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. It didn’t matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink.

They confessed their sins, and John baptized them in the Jordan.

These words of the prophet Isaiah came true when John the Baptist appeared in the desert, preaching that people should seek God’s forgiveness by being baptized and turning away from their sins.

I’m less than the least of all the Lord’s people. But he gave me the grace to preach to the Gentiles about the unlimited riches that Christ gives.

In the same way, you who are younger should follow the lead of your elders. All of you should have a humble attitude toward one another, because Scripture says, “God opposes those who are proud, but he gives grace to those who are humble.”

John was a witness for him. He cried out and said, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who came before me, because he was there before me.’ ”

He went into all the countryside around the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized and turn away from their sins so that God would forgive them.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water. The official said, “Look! Here’s some water! What can keep me from being baptized?”

He gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the official went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
