When some of those who were standing there heard Jesus cry out, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah!”

If you’re willing to accept it, John is the Elijah who was supposed to come.

At about three o’clock, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (That means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”)

Right away one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, lifted it up on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink.
