When Jesus responded this way, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. “Is that any way to answer the high priest?” he demanded.

Then they spit on him and beat him on the head with the stick.

Then some began to spit on him. They blindfolded him, hit him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” Then the guards took him and beat him.

But I tell you not to retaliate against someone who treats you poorly. Suppose someone slaps you on your right cheek. Then turn your other cheek to them as well.

And let’s keep looking to Jesus. He’s the one who leads us into faith and the one who makes our faith mature. Because of the joy he was looking forward to, he didn’t let the shame of being put to death on a cross stop him. He suffered on the cross, and then he sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Then they kept going up to him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” while they slapped him in the face.

But then they repeatedly beat him on the head with a stick and spit on him. They fell on their knees and pretended to honor him.

When others say bad things about us, we answer with kind words. We’ve become the world’s garbage, and we’re still everybody’s trash even now.

who will humiliate him and spit on him, whip him and kill him. But three days later, he will rise from the dead!”
