The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to the one who hands him over! It would have been better for him if he he’d never been born.”

He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,

Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Things like that must come. Woe to the person who causes them!

When I passed on to you what I received, I told you that the most important thing was that Christ died for our sins, just as Scripture said he would;

While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe through the name you gave me. Not one of them has been lost, except the one headed for destruction, so that Scripture would come true.

But then how would the Scriptures come true? They say it has to happen in this way.”

Jesus replied, “Elijah will come first and put everything back in order. So why is it written that the Son of Man will suffer much and be rejected?

But of all this has happened to make the words of the prophets come true.” Then all his disciples abandoned him and ran away.

They arranged to meet with Paul on a certain day. When it came, even more of the Jewish leaders went to the place where he was staying. From morning until evening, he told them about the kingdom of God. He used the Law of Moses and the Prophets to try to convince them about Jesus.

They did what your power and purpose had already decided would happen.

Long ago God planned that Jesus would be handed over to you. With the help of those who didn’t know God’s law, and under the plan God spoke long ago, you put him to death by nailing him to a cross.

Later, when Jesus knew that everything had now been finished, so that Scripture would come true, he said, “I’m thirsty.”

“Let’s not tear it in pieces,” they said to one another. “Let’s cast lots to see who will take it.” This happened so that the Scripture would come true that says, “They divided up my clothes among them, and they cast lots for what I was wearing.” So that’s what the soldiers did.

Jesus told them, “You’re all going to abandon me this very night. It’s written that the Lord said, “ ‘I will strike the shepherd down, and then the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
