Jesus went on to tell the people a story. “A man planted a vineyard,” he said. “He rented it out to some farmers, then he went away for a long time.

But suppose the slave is a bad person and he says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time. I can do whatever I want.’

But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time to come back,’ and he begins to beat the other servants. Suppose that instead of feeding those men and women, he only feeds himself and drinks until he gets drunk.

“After a long time, the master of those slaves returned. He wanted to see how the slaves had managed his money.

Be alert and stay sober. Your enemy the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for something to kill and eat.

That’s why it’s said, “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

When you do these things, keep in mind the times we’re living in. The time has already come for you to wake up from your sleep. The full effects of our salvation are closer now than when we first believed in Christ.

I tell you, God will see that things are made right for them, and he’ll make sure that it happens quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find people on earth who have faith?”

Then he came back and found the three of them sleeping again. They couldn’t keep their eyes open,

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t any of you keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.

I’m not asking you to do anything else except to hold on to what you have until I come.

The wise ones brought oil in jars along with their lamps.

“At midnight someone cried out, ‘The groom is coming! Go out and meet him!’

While all this was happening, the people were waiting for Zechariah to come out of the temple. They were wondering why he was staying in there for so long.
