“Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man marries but dies without having children, his brother has to marry the widow so she can have children to carry on her late husband’s name.

“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man must marry the widow in order to provide children to carry on his dead brother’s name.

“Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote in the law that if a man dies without having any children, but he leaves a wife behind, his brother has to marry the widow so that she can have children to carry on her late husband’s name.

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say?

“Teacher,” he asked, “which commandment in the Law is the greatest?”

They sent their disciples to him with some of the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you’re a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God truthfully. You don’t let others influence what you do or say, no matter how important they are.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father in heaven.

There were seven brothers among us. The first one got married, but he died without having any children, so the next brother married his widow.

Now then, when the dead rise, whose wife will she be? All seven brothers were married to her.”
