Give everyone what you owe them. If you owe taxes, then pay them. If you owe other fees, then pay those. And don’t forget that you also owe your leaders respect and honor and that you should give them those things.

But Peter and John replied, “Which is right from God’s point of view? For us listen to you, or to God? You be the judges!

Jesus answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

They began to make accusations against him. They said, “We’ve found this man leading our people astray. He says they shouldn’t pay taxes to Caesar, and he claims to be the Messiah—a king.”

Peter and the other apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than people!

Jesus said to him, “Get away from me, Satan! It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

“Whose picture is on this coin? And whose name and titles?”

Then Jesus told them, “Return to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and return to God what belongs to God.” They were amazed by this answer.

He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give back to God what belongs to God.”
