When the Jews saw the crowds, they became very jealous. They began to argue with what Paul was saying and insult him.

But the Pharisees and their teachers of the law complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

So when those who’d been hired first came in, they expected to receive more. But each of them also received a day’s pay.

‘Those people who were hired last only worked for one hour,’ they said. ‘But you paid them the same as us, even though we did most of the work and were out in the hot sun all day.’

It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay, and the money could have been given to the poor.” And they started angrily telling the woman that she’d done something wrong.

Then the Jews there began to complain about Jesus because he’d said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

Jesus knew that his disciples were complaining about this message. So he said to them, “Does this offend you?
