They were all shouting loudly. Some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued sharply. “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”
Jesus went into the temple courtyard and started teaching there. The chief priests and elders of the people came up to him and asked, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority?”
So Judas came to the garden, guiding a group of soldiers and some officials sent by the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.
The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest Jesus at once, because they knew he had told that story against them. But they were afraid of the people.
Jesus then began to teach his disciples that the Son of Man would have to suffer a lot. He told them that the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law would reject him. He said that he would be killed, but that after three days he would rise again.
While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, who was one of the 12 disciples, arrived. He had a group of men with him who were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests and elders of the people had sent them.
The chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he was doing, and they heard the children in the temple courtyard shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” This made them angry.
He said to them, “Every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings new treasures out of his storeroom along with the old ones.”
