Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell everything you have. Give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “You’re missing one thing,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give the money to the poor, and you’ll have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have, give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

So sell what you own and give to the poor. That will be like putting your money in a bag that will never wear out. Store up your riches in heaven, where they can never be used up, where no thief can get near them and no moth can destroy them.

You have to ask the same kind of question, because if you don’t give up everything you have, you can’t be my disciple.

They sold houses and land and other things they owned so that they could give to anyone who needed anything.

Anyone who serves me must follow me. Where I am, my servant will also be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

Then he said to all of them, “Whoever wants to follow me must say no to themselves, pick up their cross every day, and follow me.

My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

So be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

I tell you, use the riches of this world to make friends for yourselves. Then when your riches are gone, you will be welcomed into an eternal home.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, when all things are made new and the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, then you who have followed me will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “All those who want to be my disciples must say ‘no’ to themselves, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

The student isn’t better than the teacher, but everyone who is completely trained will be like their teacher.

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him.

Jesus called the crowd to him, along with his disciples, and he said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple has to deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at a tax collection booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him. So Matthew got up and followed him.

You suffered along with people in prison, and when your property was taken from you, you accepted that with joy, because you knew that God had given you better and more lasting things.

As he was walking along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at a tax collection booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him. Levi got up and followed him.

But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

“Come and follow me,” Jesus told them, “and I’ll send you out to fish for people.”

“I’ve obeyed all those commandments,” the young man said. “What else do I need to do?”

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he was very rich.
