Then Jesus told his disciples, “All those who want to be my disciples must say ‘no’ to themselves, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

Whoever doesn’t pick up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Whoever doesn’t carry their cross and follow me can’t be my disciple.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “You’re missing one thing,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give the money to the poor, and you’ll have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be treated badly,

Jesus called the crowd to him, along with his disciples, and he said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple has to deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.

There they strengthened the disciples, encouraging them to remain faithful to what they’d been taught. “We have to go through many hard times to enter the kingdom of God,” they explained.

I’m joyful because of what I’m suffering for you. My suffering continues the sufferings of Christ for his body, which is the church.

Carrying his own cross, he went out to a place called the Skull. (In the Hebrew language it was called Golgotha.)

We didn’t want anyone’s faith to be shaken by these times of testing, which you know very well will happen to us.

On their way out of the city, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.

A man from Cyrene named Simon (he’s the father of Alexander and Rufus) was coming in from the country. When he went past the soldiers who were leading Jesus away, they stopped him and forced him to carry the cross.

As the soldiers led him away, they grabbed a man named Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country. They put a wooden cross on his shoulders and made him carry it behind Jesus.

Jesus said this to show Peter how he would die and bring glory to God. Then Jesus said to him, “Follow me!”

Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what does that matter to you? You must follow me.”

This is what God wants you to do. Remember, Christ suffered for you, and he left you an example that he expects you to follow.
