They were all shouting loudly. Some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued sharply. “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?”

But the Pharisees and their teachers of the law complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to think, “Who is this person who says such an evil thing? Only God can forgive sins!”

One day when Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the law were among those sitting there and listening to him. They’d come from every village in Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.

Some teachers of the law who had come down from Jerusalem said, “He is controlled by Beelzebul! He’s driving out demons by the power of the prince of demons.”

“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees base what they tell you on the teachings of Moses.

I tell you, unless your righteousness is even better than the righteousness of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you won’t enter the kingdom of heaven.
