But because they have no roots, they last only a short time. When trouble or suffering comes because of the message, they quickly fall away from the faith.

But you must keep your faith steady and firm and not move away from the hope that the good news is offering you. This is the good news that you heard. It has been preached to every creature under heaven and I, Paul, am its servant.

Then Christ will live in your hearts because you believe in him. And I pray that your love will have deep roots and a strong foundation.

The seed on rocky ground stands for those who hear the message and receive it with joy, but who have no roots. They believe for a while, but when they are tested, they fall away from the faith.

‘They won’t ever be hungry again, and they won’t ever be thirsty again. The sun won’t beat down on them,’ and the heat of the desert won’t harm them.

Put down deep roots and build yourselves up in him. Grow strong in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflow with thanksgiving.

Some seed fell in rocky places where there wasn’t much soil. Those plants came up quickly because the soil wasn’t very deep.

Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and crowded out the plants.

But when the sun came up, it burned the plants and they dried up, because they had no roots.
