Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this story? Then how will you understand any of the stories?

Jesus spoke the message to them using many stories like these, telling them as much as they could understand.

When Jesus had finished telling these stories, he moved on from there.

Then the chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders looked for a way to arrest Jesus, because they knew he’d told the story against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

“I’ve been telling you things using images and stories. But a time is coming when I won’t use examples; I’ll tell you plainly about my Father.

Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this story to us, or to everyone?”

“You are being given the chance to understand the secrets of God’s kingdom. But to outsiders, I speak in stories. That way, “ ‘They’ll see, but they won’t know what they’re seeing; they’ll hear, but they won’t understand what they’re hearing.’

Then Jesus began to speak to the people using stories. He said, “A man planted a vineyard, put up a wall around it, dug a pit for a winepress, and built a lookout tower. Then he rented the vineyard out to some farmers and moved to another place.

So Jesus called them over and gave them an illustration. He said, “How can Satan drive out Satan?

“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.

Jesus told them more stories. He said,

As he scattered it, some fell on a path and the birds came and ate it up.
