And what about you, Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to the heavens? No! You’ll go down to the place of the dead. If the miracles that I did in you had been done in Sodom, it would still be here today.

Though he had grown up in Nazareth, he went to live in the city of Capernaum. That was by the lake, in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali.

Their bodies will lie in the main street of the great city where their Lord was nailed to a cross. That city is sometimes compared to Sodom and Egypt.

The people of Sodom and Gomorrah and the towns around them did immoral and unnatural things. Those people are an example of those who are punished with fire that never goes out.

You will not leave me in the place of the dead. You will not let your holy one decay.

All who lift themselves up will be humbled, but those who humble themselves will be lifted up.”

I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church. The gates of Hades won’t be too strong for it.

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman commander came and asked him for help.

In the land of the dead, the rich man was suffering terribly. He looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

Jesus responded, “You’ll certainly apply this saying to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself!’ And by that you’ll mean, ‘We want you to do here in your hometown the things we’ve heard you did in Capernaum.’ ”

Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum. There the people who collected the temple tax came to Peter and asked him, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”

Truly I tell you, on judgment day it will be easier for Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

And what about you, Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to the heavens? No! You will go down to the place of the dead.

David saw what was coming, and so he spoke about the Messiah rising from the dead. He meant that the Messiah wouldn’t be left in the place of the dead. His body wouldn’t decay in the ground.

the Living One. I was dead, but now look! I’m alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys to death and Hades.

I looked, and there in front of me was a pale horse! Its rider’s name was Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a quarter of the world, to kill people with swords, hunger, sickness, and wild animals.

The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and Death and Hades gave up their dead. Each person was judged by what they’d done.
