Jesus called the crowd to him, along with his disciples, and he said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple has to deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow me.

Whoever doesn’t pick up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

People who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed their wrong desires to his cross. They don’t want to follow them anymore.

I’ve been crucified with Christ. I’m not the one living anymore. Christ is living in me. I do continue to live in this body, but I do that by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ gave his life for us. So we should give our own lives for our brothers and sisters.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “All those who want to be my disciples must say ‘no’ to themselves, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

I want to know Christ and the power that raised him from the dead and what it means to join him in his sufferings. I want to become like him in his death

And since we are his children, we’re going to inherit everything that Christ will also inherit. But we must share in his sufferings if we also want to share in his glory.

Then he said to all of them, “Whoever wants to follow me must say no to themselves, pick up their cross every day, and follow me.

So put to death anything that comes from your wrong desires: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

I thought that things like that were real advantages. But now I consider them to be worthless because of Christ.

Since Christ suffered in his body, protect yourselves by having the same attitude that he did, because anyone who suffers in their body is finished with sin.

I don’t ever want to brag about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through that cross, the world has been crucified to me and I have been crucified to the world.

I face death every day, just as surely as I take pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done for you through my work.

We know that our old self was nailed to the cross with him. That happened so that our bodies that were so used to sinning wouldn’t control us anymore. Now we’re not slaves of sin any longer.

You have to ask the same kind of question, because if you don’t give up everything you have, you can’t be my disciple.

I know that I’ll soon be leaving it, because our Lord Jesus Christ has made that clear to me.

Instead, be glad that you can take part in Christ’s sufferings. That way you’ll be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

It teaches us to say no to godless ways and wrong desires and to live self-controlled, proper, and godly lives in this world

I’m joyful because of what I’m suffering for you. My suffering continues the sufferings of Christ for his body, which is the church.

There they strengthened the disciples, encouraging them to remain faithful to what they’d been taught. “We have to go through many hard times to enter the kingdom of God,” they explained.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have, give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

“Try very hard to enter through the narrow door. I tell you that many will try to enter, but they will not be able to.

On their way out of the city, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Don’t be afraid of what you’re going to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you’ll be mistreated for ten days. Be faithful, even if you have to die, and I’ll give you life as your victory crown.

So let’s go to him outside the camp and be willing to suffer the shame he suffered.

We hear that some people among you are lazy and disruptive. They don’t do any work of their own, and they meddle in other people’s business.

I’m free and I don’t belong to anyone, but I’ve made myself a slave to everyone. I’ve done that to win as many people as I can to Christ.

So if eating food sacrificed to idols would cause my brother or sister to fall into sin, I’ll never eat that food again. That way, I won’t ever cause them to fall.

Carrying his own cross, he went out to a place called the Skull. (In the Hebrew language it was called Golgotha.)

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “You’re missing one thing,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give the money to the poor, and you’ll have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”

Jesus called the crowd to him again and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
