They deal only with food and drink and different kinds of ceremonial washings, which are rules about the outside of a person. They had to be followed only until the new covenant came.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but the inside is full of greed and selfishness.

Come near to God, and he’ll come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you who can’t make up your minds.

There were six water jars nearby made from stone. The Jews used water from that kind of jar to wash themselves so that they would be pure and clean. Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons.

But if we walk in the light, just as he is in the light, then we share life with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son makes us pure from all sin.
