While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” the messenger said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
“Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there will be a bad smell, because Lazarus has been in that tomb for four days.”
After she said this, she went back home and called her sister Mary aside to speak with her. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and he’s asking for you.”
Truly I tell you, a time is coming—and in fact, it has already come—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and got down on his knees in front of him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”
When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and she saw him, she knelt down in front of him. “Lord,” she said, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
He answered, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I’d like to celebrate the Passover at your house with my disciples.” ’ ”
While Jesus was saying this, a synagogue leader came and got down on his knees in front of Jesus. He said, “My daughter has just died. But if you come and place your hand on her, she will live again.”
