The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to think, “Who is this person who says such an evil thing? Only God can forgive sins!”

The other guests began to ask each other, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

“We’re not going to throw stones at you for any good work,” they answered. “We’re going to stone you because you claim to be God when you’re only a man.”

“You’ve heard him claim that he’s God! How does it look to you?” They all found him guilty and said he had to die.

Then the high priest ripped his clothes and said, “This man has claimed to be God! Why do we need any more witnesses? You’ve heard what he said.

At this, some teachers of the law said to themselves, “This man has no right to talk like that, as if he were God!”

then what about the one the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why do you accuse me of doing wrong because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?

Some teachers of the law were sitting there thinking,

Right away Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things?
