Right then the rooster crowed for a second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had told him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you’ll say three times that you don’t know me.” And he broke down and cried.

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus responded, “tonight—before the rooster crows twice—you’ll claim three times that you don’t know me.”

But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he insisted, “it’s nonsense.” Then he went out to the entrance to the courtyard. A rooster crowed.

Godly sadness causes us to turn away from our sins and be saved. And we’re certainly not sorry about that! But worldly sadness brings death.

Peter went outside and he broke down and cried.

Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you’ll claim three times that you don’t know me.”

“May I be cursed if I’m not telling the truth!” Peter said to them. “I swear that I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”
