“But now I’m deeply distressed. What should I say? ‘Father, keep me from having to go through with this’? No, this is the very reason why I’ve come to this point in my life.
He appeared on earth as a man, and he humbled himself and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to his death. Even worse, he died on a cross!
He went off a little distance and got down on the ground face first. He prayed, “My Father, if possible, please take this cup of suffering away from me. But let your will be done, not mine.”
That’s why he swore an oath. Then there were two things that guaranteed God was telling the truth: his promise and his oath. He gave us those two things so that we’d be very encouraged as we run to take hold of the hope that has been set before us.
Jesus went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it isn’t possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, then may your will be done.”
