“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Not what I want, though. Do what you want.”

Because you are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. This is the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father!”

I can do nothing by myself. I judge only as I hear, and I judge fairly, because I don’t try to please myself. I try to please the one who sent me.

But even if we’re not faithful, he’ll still be faithful, because he must always be true to himself.

“But now I’m deeply distressed. What should I say? ‘Father, keep me from having to go through with this’? No, this is the very reason why I’ve come to this point in my life.

Then they will live in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began that he would give us.

He appeared on earth as a man, and he humbled himself and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to his death. Even worse, he died on a cross!

“Put your sword away!” Jesus commanded Peter. “Shouldn’t I drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “With people, it’s impossible, but not with God. All things are possible with God.”

“My food,” Jesus said, “is to do what my Father sent me to do and to finish his work.

He went off a little distance and got down on the ground face first. He prayed, “My Father, if possible, please take this cup of suffering away from me. But let your will be done, not mine.”

“Therefore, pray like this: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored.

That’s why he swore an oath. Then there were two things that guaranteed God was telling the truth: his promise and his oath. He gave us those two things so that we’d be very encouraged as we run to take hold of the hope that has been set before us.

Jesus went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it isn’t possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, then may your will be done.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?

“We can,” they answered. Jesus told them, “You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will go through the baptism that I go through.
