Jesus was in Bethany, eating dinner in the home of Simon the Leper. A woman came in with an alabaster jar that contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.

Mary would later pour perfume on the Lord and wipe his feet with her hair. Lazarus, who was sick in bed, was her brother.

Then Jesus left them and went out of the city to spend the night in Bethany.

“But we can’t do it during the feast,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
