So the Pharisees said to one another, “Look, we aren’t getting anywhere. See how the whole world is following him!”

When the people heard his words, some of them said, “This man must be the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”

But if we say, ‘From people,’ all the people will throw stones at us to kill us, because they believe John was a prophet.”

But we can’t say, ‘On human authority’!” (They were afraid of the people, because everyone believed that John really was a prophet.)

When the chief priests and the teachers of the law heard about this, they began to look for a way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

“But we can’t do it during the feast,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”

“As you know, the Passover Feast is two days away. The Son of Man is going to be handed over to his enemies, and they will nail him to a cross.”

When the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, the chief priests and the teachers of the law got together to make plans to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.

Jesus was in Bethany, eating dinner in the home of Simon the Leper. A woman came in with an alabaster jar that contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was near.
