One of the teachers of the law had been listening to the discussion and he realized that Jesus had given a good answer. So he came up and asked him, “Which is the most important of all the commandments?”

Some of the teachers of the law responded, “You have spoken well, teacher!”

“Which ones?” the man asked. Jesus said, “ ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not be a false witness,

So anyone who sets aside one of the least of the commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But anyone who practices and teaches the commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

“Woe to you Pharisees! You give God a tenth of everything, right down to the plants in your garden, such as mint and rue. But you have neglected justice and the love of God. You should have pursued those things even as you gave your ten percent.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You give God a tenth of your spices like mint, dill, and cumin. But you’ve neglected the more important things in the law, which are justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have done those things and not neglected the first ones either.

When they got back to the other disciples, they found a large crowd standing around them, and the teachers of the law were arguing with them.
