Then Jesus began to speak to the people using stories. He said, “A man planted a vineyard, put up a wall around it, dug a pit for a winepress, and built a lookout tower. Then he rented the vineyard out to some farmers and moved to another place.

It’s like a man who goes away and puts his servants in charge of his house. He gives each one a task to do, and the one he leaves at the door he tells to keep watch.

He taught them many things by telling them stories. In his teaching he said,

“Again, here is what the kingdom of heaven will be like. A man was going on a journey. He sent for his slaves and put them in charge of his money. The man gave each slave an amount of money he knew the slave could manage.

Moses was with the Israelites in the desert, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our people of long ago. He received living words to pass on to us.

Jesus said, “A man from an important family went to a country far away to be made king and to return home to his subjects after that.

“Not long after that, the younger son packed up everything he had, went to a distant country, and wasted his money on extravagant living.

“You are being given the chance to understand the secrets of God’s kingdom. But to outsiders, I speak in stories. That way, “ ‘They’ll see, but they won’t know what they’re seeing; they’ll hear, but they won’t understand what they’re hearing.’

“What do you think about this? A certain man had two sons. He went to the first one and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

Then he taught them many things by telling them stories. He said, “A farmer went out to plant his seed.

“Listen to another story. A certain man owned some land and planted a vineyard on it. He put up a wall around it, dug a pit for a winepress, and built a lookout tower. Then he rented the vineyard out to some farmers and moved to another place.

When harvest time came, he sent his slaves to the renters to collect his share of the fruit.

So Jesus called them over and gave them an illustration. He said, “How can Satan drive out Satan?

So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you by what authority I’m doing these things either.”
