Later, when Jesus knew that everything had now been finished, so that Scripture would come true, he said, “I’m thirsty.”

Jesus didn’t eat for 40 days and 40 nights, and he got very hungry.

So he had to be made like them—fully human in every way. That way he could serve God as a merciful and faithful high priest and purify the people from their sins.

and there the devil tempted him for 40 days. Jesus ate nothing during that time, and at the end of the 40 days he was very hungry.

Off in the distance Jesus saw a fig tree that was full of leaves. He went over to see if it had any fruit. But when he got there, all he found was leaves, because it wasn’t time for figs to ripen yet.

In the morning, as Jesus and his disciples were walking along, they saw the fig tree again. It was dried up all the way down to its roots.
