They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way. The disciples were amazed, and the crowd that was following along was afraid. Jesus took his 12 disciples to one side and told them again what was going to happen to him.

When the time grew near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he resolved to go to Jerusalem.

Then Thomas, who was also called Didymus, said to the rest of the disciples, “Let’s go along, so we can die with him.”

“Rabbi,” they objected, “the Jews there were just trying to kill you with stones. And now you want to go back?”

Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

He didn’t teach them anything without using a story. But when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

He answered, “Because they aren’t being given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven the way you are.

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you’ve hidden these things from wise and educated people and shown them to little children.

All the people were amazed and asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with such authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.”

After Jesus had said this, he continued on, going up to Jerusalem.
