“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “It’s not time for us to be punished yet!”

Do you have faith that there’s one God? Good for you! Even the demons believe that, and they tremble!

“Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—you’re the Holy One of God!”

You spoke against the Holy and Blameless One, and you asked for a murderer to be set free instead.

“Write this to the angel of the church in Philadelphia: These are the words of the one who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. No one can shut what he opens, and no one can open what he shuts.

You will not leave me in the place of the dead. You will not let your holy one decay.

When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet. He shouted at the top of his voice, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God, what do you want with me? I beg you, don’t torture me!”

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High God will overshadow you, so that the holy one who is born will be called the Son of God.

“We’ve found that this Paul is a troublemaker. Everywhere he goes in the world, riots break out among the Jews. He’s the leader of a cult called the Nazarenes.

In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city. Together they conspired against your holy servant Jesus, your chosen one.

“What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet who was powerful in what he said and did in the sight of God and all the people.

There he lived in a town called Nazareth. The prophets had said that Jesus would be called a Nazarene, and in this way their words came true.

Then all the people who lived in the land of the Gerasenes were so filled with fear that they asked Jesus to go away. So he got into the boat to leave.

Just then a man in the synagogue who was controlled by an evil spirit cried out,

“Be quiet!” Jesus ordered the spirit. “Come out of him!”

When he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, he began to shout, “Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!”

and when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him closely. “You were also with Jesus, that Nazarene,” she said.

“Don’t be distressed,” he said. “You’re looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He’s not here! He has risen! Look, this is where his body was.

But the Holy One has made the Spirit flow all over you, just as if you’d had sacred oil poured on your head, and so all of you know the truth.
