They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others say that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”

“Then who are you?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?” “No, I’m not,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?” they asked. “No,” he answered.

Others said, “He’s Elijah!” Still others claimed, “He’s a prophet, like those of long ago.”

He told his officials, “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That’s why he has the power to do miracles.”

Then they turned again to the blind man. “What do you have to say about him?” they asked. “It was your eyes he opened.” The man answered, “He’s a prophet.”

When the people heard his words, some of them said, “This man must be the Prophet we’ve been expecting.”

asked him, “Why are you baptizing people if you’re not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet we’ve been expecting?”

In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the desert around Judea.

King Herod heard about this because Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “He’s John the Baptist, raised from the dead! That’s why he has the power to do miracles.”

One day when Jesus was praying alone and only his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
