Later, when Jesus was alone, the 12 disciples and others around him asked about the stories.

“Listen! Here’s what the story about the farmer means.

The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do you tell stories when you speak to the people?”

I don’t call you slaves anymore, because slaves don’t know their master’s plans. Instead, I’ve called you friends, because I’ve told you everything I’ve learned from my Father.

He didn’t teach them anything without using a story. But when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

Peter asked, “But what did you mean by what you said?”

Then Jesus left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and asked, “Please explain the story of the weeds in the field to us.”
