and she must be well known for doing good things such as bringing up children, inviting guests into her home, serving the Lord’s people in humble ways, and helping those in trouble. A widow should spend her time doing all kinds of good things like these.

All of God’s people here send you greetings, particularly those who work in the emperor’s palace.

In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers. Among them were Barnabas, Simeon (also called Niger), Lucius from Cyrene, and Manaen, who’d been brought up with Herod, the ruler of Galilee. Saul was among them too.

At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, heard reports about Jesus.

Earlier, Herod had arrested John and tied him up and put him in prison. This was because John had been telling Herod, “It’s against the Law of Moses for you to have Herodias as your wife,” since she’d been the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.

But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, and she pleased Herod very much.

“When evening came, the manager of the vineyard told his foreman, ‘Call the workers in and give them their pay. Begin with the ones I hired last and end with the ones I hired first.’

Many women were watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to take care of his needs.

But he didn’t say that because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the moneybag, and he used to help himself to what was in it.
