You know how generous our Lord Jesus Christ was. Even though he was rich, he became poor for your sake, so that because he became poor, you would become rich.
In everything I did, I showed you that we must work hard and help the weak. We must remember the words of the Lord Jesus, who said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have, give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.”
So sell what you own and give to the poor. That will be like putting your money in a bag that will never wear out. Store up your riches in heaven, where they can never be used up, where no thief can get near them and no moth can destroy them.
Give, and it will be given to you. A full amount will be poured into your lap, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. The same measure you use for others will be used for you.”
Anyone who used to steal must never steal again. Instead, they should work, doing something useful with their own hands, so that they will have something to share with people in need.
But I tell you not to retaliate against someone who treats you poorly. Suppose someone slaps you on your right cheek. Then turn your other cheek to them as well.
Suppose someone slaps you on one cheek. Then let them slap you on the other cheek as well. Suppose someone takes your coat. Don’t stop them from taking your shirt too.
