My dear brothers and sisters, listen to me. Hasn’t God chosen those who are poor in the world’s eyes to be rich in faith? Hasn’t he chosen them to receive the kingdom that he promised to give to those who love him?

You know how generous our Lord Jesus Christ was. Even though he was rich, he became poor for your sake, so that because he became poor, you would become rich.

“Don’t be afraid, little flock, your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.

“Then the King will speak to those on his right and say, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take what is yours. Receive the kingdom that has been prepared for you since the world was created.

‘I know that you’re suffering and that you’re poor—but you’re rich! I know how you’re being insulted by people who claim to be Jews but aren’t. They’re a synagogue of Satan.

We’re often distressed, but we’re always full of joy. We’re poor, but we make many people rich. We own nothing, but we never lack anything.

Blessed is the person who keeps going when times are difficult. After they’ve made it through these times, they’ll receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to give to those who love him.

Your endurance is a clear sign that God judges fairly. You’ll be considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you’re suffering.

And you imitated both us and the Lord Jesus, because even in the midst of terrible suffering, you welcomed our message with the joy that the Holy Spirit gives.

They were going through a great trial, but they were still overflowing with joy, so that even though they were very poor, they gave generously.

There they strengthened the disciples, encouraging them to remain faithful to what they’d been taught. “We have to go through many hard times to enter the kingdom of God,” they explained.

One of the people at the table with him heard these things and he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in God’s kingdom.”

“You will weep and grind your teeth together when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in God’s kingdom while you yourselves are thrown out.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to announce the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to make the blind see again, to set free those who are mistreated,

Those who are blind are receiving their sight, those who are disabled are walking, those with skin diseases are being made clean, those who are deaf are hearing, and the dead are being raised to life. And the good news is preached to those who are poor.

“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received good things, while Lazarus received bad things. Now he is comforted here while you are in terrible pain.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
