Around this time Caesar Augustus made a law that required everyone in the whole Roman world to register for taxation and military service.

They tied him up, took him away, and turned him over to Pilate, the governor.

The king stood up, and so the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them stood up too.

After two years passed, Porcius Festus became the governor instead of Felix. But Felix wanted to do the Jews a favor, so he left Paul in prison.

In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city. Together they conspired against your holy servant Jesus, your chosen one.

Pilate decided to give them what they wanted.

Now Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything that was going on. He was bewildered, because some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead,

But John criticized Herod, the ruler of Galilee, because he had married Herodias, who had been his own brother’s wife. John also spoke strongly to Herod about many other wrong things that he’d done.

It was Herod himself who’d given the orders to arrest John. He had him tied up and put in prison because of Herodias, the woman who had been the wife of his brother Philip, but who was now married to him.

Earlier, Herod had arrested John and tied him up and put him in prison. This was because John had been telling Herod, “It’s against the Law of Moses for you to have Herodias as your wife,” since she’d been the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.

At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, heard reports about Jesus.

But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, and she pleased Herod very much.

Tell us, then, what do you think? According to the law of Moses, should we pay the royal tax to Caesar?”

Herodias got her opportunity when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday. He invited his high officials, his military commanders, and the most important leaders of Galilee.

At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else, because Herod wants to kill you.”
