Pilate wanted to let Jesus go, so he appealed to the crowd again.

Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd, so he let Barabbas go free. But he ordered Jesus to be whipped, and then he handed him over to be nailed to a cross.

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free. But the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you’re not Caesar’s friend! Anyone who claims to be a king is against Caesar!”

Pilate also wanted to release Jesus because he’d gotten a message from his wife while he was judging the case. The message said, “Don’t do anything to that man. He’s innocent. I had a terrible nightmare about him last night.”

(Barabbas had been thrown into prison because he’d led a revolt in the city against the authorities, during which he had committed murder.)

But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
