As John was finishing his work, he asked, ‘Who do you think I am? I’m not the one you’re looking for. But there is someone coming after me. I’m not worthy to untie his sandals.’
The disciples came to John and said, “Rabbi, everyone is going to that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River. You were a witness about who he was, and now he’s here baptizing people.”
Where did John’s baptism come from? Was it from heaven, or was he acting on human authority?” They talked this over among themselves and realized, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he’ll ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’
