“Woe to you Pharisees! You love the most important seats in the synagogues, and you love having people greet you with respect in the marketplace.

Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, so he told them a story.

During that time, when a crowd of so many thousands had gathered that the people were stepping on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples. He said, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. They just pretend to be godly.

“Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the first in everything, wouldn’t acknowledge me.

You should watch out for him too, because he strongly opposed our message.

Love one another deeply. Honor one another more than yourselves.

“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.”

Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,

But they cheat widows out of their houses and say long prayers to show off. God will punish them severely.”
