After that, Judas from Galilee came along, in the days when the Romans made everyone register to pay taxes. Judas started a revolt, but he too was killed, and all his followers were scattered.

“Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “Who do the kings of the earth collect taxes and fees from? Do they collect them from their own children, or from others?”

So the spies questioned Jesus. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you speak and teach what is right. We know you don’t favor one person over another. You teach the way of God truthfully.

Jesus knew they were trying to trick him, and he said to them,

They began to make accusations against him. They said, “We’ve found this man leading our people astray. He says they shouldn’t pay taxes to Caesar, and he claims to be the Messiah—a king.”

Give everyone what you owe them. If you owe taxes, then pay them. If you owe other fees, then pay those. And don’t forget that you also owe your leaders respect and honor and that you should give them those things.
