Jesus told them, “You try to make yourselves look good in the eyes of other people, but God knows your hearts. There are things that people value highly that God can’t stand.

They didn’t know how God makes people right with himself, so they tried to get right with God in their own way. They didn’t realize that

So then, who are you to judge your brother or sister? Why do you act as if you’re better than they are? We will all stand before God as our judge.

The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him—what kind of woman she is. She’s a sinner!”

Before I knew about the law, I was alive. But then the commandment came, sin came to life, and I died.

When all the people saw this, they began to whisper among themselves, “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people—not like robbers, or people who do other evil things, or those who commit adultery, or even like this tax collector.

“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go, I’m sending you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”

Then the Pharisees replied, “Your parents were living in sin when you were born! You know what that makes you. So how dare you talk to us like that?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.

Then they started to insult him. “You’re this man’s disciple,” they said, “but we’re disciples of Moses!

The Jews answered Jesus, “Aren’t we right to say that you’re a Samaritan and controlled by a demon?”

the Pharisees and the teachers of the law started muttering, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

But the man wanted to prove himself right, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

A person who eats everything must not look down someone who doesn’t. A person who doesn’t eat everything must not judge someone who does. God has accepted them.
